Final Blog For 2019
Today is the last day of term 4 which means that it is the last day of the school year. I think this year was a lot better last because I have many more friends and many more people to support me. I also enjoyed all of the awesome opportunities I had like Kids for Kids, National Young Leaders Day, Authors Workshop and the Student council. I really liked this year and I hope next year is even better.

Playing To Win
This week for novel study I finished the book Playing To Win. This is the second to last task that I have to do and here it is:
A conflict is a argument between two or more people. Denny and Alice have their differences, Denny likes rugby and Alice doesn't. Alice's brother was killed drunk driving under the influence of alcohol, after a rugby party. Denny absolutely loves rugby and the thrill of it but he worry's that he has lost Alice because of something he loves. In Alice's opinion she thinks that the same thing will happen to Denny and his other friends because of what happened to her brother.

Summer Learning Journey - Introductions
Hi Emma,
My name is Hayley from HHS. I'm year 8 and I will be participating in the Summer Learning Journey for 2019. I am looking forward to participating in this because I want to keep my learning up for the school holidays. At school I like learning Literacy and Writing because I think they are some of my strong characteristics. I like the SLJ because of the way it helps with your learning. I hope that the SLJ will help keep my learning strong and sturdy for when I become a year 9.
I really enjoy you commenting on my blog and giving be feedback.

CIP - Kindness Painting
This week and last week for CIP we had to work in groups to make a banner that shows kindness. I worked with Shelby, Felicity and Shalizeh. We made a banner that said " A smile is the best given gift" We painted our banner with lots of bright colours like pink, blue, gold, silver, yellow and red. Here is a photo:
Creative Writing - Bridge In The Woods
Yesterday we started a creative writing story. We had to choose from some different photos and the one we chose is the one we had to write about. I chose a bridge that was in the middle of a forest. Enjoy!
This is the story of Emma Smith. She is a twelve year old girl who experienced the most wonderful thing in the world. But first it was anything but wonderful. Her father and mother decided to get a divorce when she was eleven and it didn't help that she was also struggling at school. She had to live with her mum which was fine until she had to move to a completely different place. When Emma got to her new house she asked her mother if she could go and explore the the forest surrounding the house but her mother said " I have to tell you something" Emma felt worried. " Your father has been diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer and was only given a year to live" Emma was shocked. She ran outside crying and being in disbelief. After running for what felt like an eternity she reached a bridge that looked like it went on forever. She was still very upset so she ran across the bridge. Then she saw it, a forest covered with leaves hanging from thousands of tree branches. The leaves made it so dark that there were fireflies everywhere. There were also thousands of flowers coming from bushes and some of the trees. Then she walked down a path made of the greenest grass she had ever seen. When she reached the end of the pathway she found a golden well that was full of crystal clear water that shimmered with the light of the fireflies. She was still crying a little bit and a tear fell in the well. The water rippled as the tear fell. Then all of a sudden a face appeared in the well. it was her father face, she smiled. The face said...
Stay tuned for part 2 :)

Playing To Win
This week for novel study we are doing two more tasks. Here is what I have to do for the second one:
Here is the cover I decided to make. I decided to do this cover because It has the title, A rugby ball and a the rugby posts. I was going to put silhouettes of rugby players in the book but I couldn't find one that was transparent.

Playing To Win
This week for novel study we are doing two more tasks. Here is what I have to do for the first one:
I have the responsibility of being involved in different sports and being a part of my team. I manage them by being on time to both my practices and games and playing to the best of my ability. I think my team and coaches trust me with the roles I play and how i work with them. Another responsibility I have is being able to keep my room clean because I am not very consistent with that, but I try anyways. I think that if I try harder to put everything in its spot then maybe it will be cleaner.

Playing To Win
Today for my novel study I have to do my third and final task for these first few chapters. I have to:
When I started this school at year 7 I thought it was going to be a good year until I realised that there were really mean people in my class. I got through it but it was really hard. What helped me fit was knowing that there were some friends that helped me and my mum was really supportive two. I would tell Denny that even though he's at a new school and he dosen't know many people that he will find his way and be able to survive the school year.

Playing To Win
Today we had to start our tasks for our new novel study Playing To Win. The first task was to comment on someones blog post about their first conclusion of the book. The second task is to :
There is tension between Denny and Todd and Denny because Todd thinks that Denny is a little better than him and that he would steal all his friends. Todd is also giving Denny a hard time because Denny has also developed a crush on one of his new friends, Alice. Which is unfortunate because Todd also has his eye on her. I think on the inside Denny is feeling like an outsider because he is the "new kid" I think this because somewhere in the book it says
" I'll never fit into their group, they have known each other for years "

Digital Technolgy
For the past few weeks we have been doing our digital technology hurumanu. At the start of this hurumanu we had to either choose to work in groups or work by ourselves. I chose to work in a group with Myself, Shelby, Tasharn, Felicity and Ella. Our issue is that the rubbish that gets dumped into the ocean is affecting our aquatic wildlife, which is why we need to stop it. Our issue is classed under social and enviromental issues. We are going to use the sphero robots to get through a "under water" maze that me and my group made. Once we have finished the map I will post a photo of the finished product and also a video of us completing the maze.

PE Hurumanu
For the past few weeks we have been doing our PE hurumanu. In our groups we had to choose a sport and teach the class about that sport. My groups name is the Celtics and we chose Basketball. We showed our class this week and I think it was pretty successful because the class mostly listened to what we had to say except for when we told them they had to do lots of warm ups. I helped with the warm ups which were lunges, grapevines, star jumps and 3 laps around the gym. If I could change something the we should do next time I would pick a sport that we all know how to play. I learnt that Basketball is basically netball but you are aloud to dribble the ball. I also learnt most of the rules too so I could teach my friends and my brother. I think that this hurumanu was very fun and exciting for me and my class.
DMIC Maths
Today and Tuesday we worked with some new groups and Miss Birtch to do DMIC maths. The people in my group were Myself, Nykachia, Jullien, Jessica and Josh. We had to start with a warm up which was this:
We had to find the different patterns and name them. The actual activity was this:
The working out for this activity is at the top of the screen. First we had to read the work and understand what it was and get an idea of what it was. Then we had to work it out.
Playing To Win
This week we have started a new novel study. My group is reading Playing to Win which is about a boy named Denny Logan who moves to a new school and doesn't feel that he fits in. He wants to make it into the rugby team but his new friends don't think their coach will let him in. He also met this kid named Todd, and he doesn't particularly like Denny. Denny met this girl named Alice who he has taken a fancy to but so has Todd.
Personal Comment: Denny reminds me a lot of someone I know. So far it is a really exciting story to read and I would recommend it to everyone who likes a little bit of drama.

Orana Park Trip
This week on Monday, Bh and our new buddy class Tz went to Orana Park. We were given name tags with a number on it and I was in group 1. After we were given the name tags we sat in the learning commons for about half an hour and that's when the bus arrived Most of group 1 & 2 were able to fit into the bus but the rest had to go in a van. When we got to the park we were led to leaders named Elizabeth & Bethany. They told us all about keeping safe and how to keep the animals calm while we were there. Then both groups were led to a platform but on the way there we saw the little Meerkats and I got a cute photo of them but I don't have it. We were split into our groups then we went and saw the Spider Monkeys, Emu's, Tasmanian Devils, Lions, Tigers ( Sadly Not There ) Kiwi, Kea's and then the Reptile House. Then we had lunch which was very fun.

Hurumanu Digital Technology
This week for Digital Technology we looked at some different apps called Scratch and another called Sphero Robots. I am going to tell you about what they both are about and then I will write a personal comment. I prefer to use Sphero Robots because I think that Scratch is a little hard to use and the Sphero Robots are really easy.
Scratch:
Scratch is a web based software which is about coding games, animations and stories. There is also a Scratch Jr which is a little bit easier to use for the little kids who are learning to code.
Sphero Robots:
This app is about coding robots to do cool tricks and other things. You can manually control it and you can also program It as well.
You can also make the lights change colours and then that makes it look really cool.
Personal Comment:
I think that the Sphero Robots are really cool but I just don't think that Scratch was made to be easy for anyone.

Hurumanu PE
This week and last week for PE we have been working lot's of different things. We have been doing maths and our chosen sports with our teams. On Monday the first team shared their sport, they chose Bench Ball. Earlier in the year in another hurumanu we learnt how to play Bench Ball and so we got to play it again. The team that was running the Bench Ball made us do warm ups, drills and then games. I wasn't here for the warm ups and the first drill but the second drill we did was Sneak Up Granny. The first game we played was Tz yr 8's vs Bh yr 8's and then it was the same with the year 7's. Then. after lunch we played all yr 8's vs all year 7's, the year 8's won. last week we did maths as well because this sport hurumanu also involves maths and writing. For the maths we had to work out how many cans of paint we would need to paint four whole football fields. The maths was really tricky and my group hasn't finished yet. We used some multiplication strategies and some addition strategies. I think this week I worked pretty well with my team even though I had a little disagreement with them about our sport. The graduate profile subject chose to work on was to understand how my feelings and actions effect others and I think I did this by encouraging my teammates on and not getting too frustrated.

C.I.P
This week and last week for C.I.P we have been working on a new recycling project. We are working with a company called TerraCycle and they are helping schools all around the world recycle pens and other stationary supplies that have run out and then they will come and pick them up and recycle them.To give information about TerraCycle we made DLO's to show our work. We are also decorating boxes to put the empty pens in. Here is my DLO.
We also have to answer some questions about the TerraCycle project:
How are we going to spread our message to our community?
We are going to spread it by talking to our family and asking them to talk to their friends and spread the message.
Who do you think will get involved?
I think some of the stationery shops around Hornby will get involved and maybe some other schools.
How many kgs do you think we will collect?
I think we will collect 10 or over kgs of used up stationery.
What should we do with the donation money we get from TerraCycle?
I think we should spend the money on new stationery for each classroom so that we aren't spending the schools money for new stationery.

Ella West
Today a author named Ella West came and spoke to the year 7&8's about her books Night Vision and Rain Fall. As you know my reading group is reading the book Night Vision and we are almost finished. She also gave us a sneak peak about a new book that she is writing called The Sound Of My Heart which is about a girl who likes to run and when she does she hears her heart beat loud and clear.
Night Vision is about a girl named Viola who basically see's someone who gets murdered in a car fire next to her farm and she tries to figure out why the man committed the murder and why he had a big amount of cash.
Ella didn't tell us much about her book Rain Fall but she said that it was about two kids who liked to ride horses on the beach and then they find out about a murder that happened and then they get brought into the investigation.
Personal Comment: I think I would like to read Ella West's other books because I think that they will be really interesting and fun to read because of what I know about them.

Digital Tech, Hurumanu
For the past few weeks we have started a new hurumanu called Digital Tech. Digital Tech is where we were introduced to three different themes for issues in our earth. They were Ethical, Social and Environmental, I chose Environmental.
My issue is that our house cats are killing off our native birds and that is NOT ok. But, a man named Gareth Morgan is trying to kill off our cats which is not ok either. So I am going to make a game or app to show that we can keep our native birds and house cats around at the same time.
References:
1. Youtube Video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7czFfK3nVks
This video was a youtube show and they were talking about how this man wants get rid of cats non stop. But, if we get rid of cats then there will be more rats and they are disgusting.
People think that if we get rid of cats It will be a good thing. ( that's what this website said I want to save the cats) The think that if we....
- Get our cats neutered or spade
- Put a bell on your cats collar
- Not replacing your cat when It dies
- Keeping it inside at night
that will solve the problem.
3. Second website https://www.theverge.com/2018/8/31/17804982/cat-ban-new-zealand-omaui-conservation-wildlife
This website was about the other side of the story. They think that the cats should stay alive but we find a solution to save both the cats and the birds. They have a few ideas but the haven't made them public yet.

P.E Hurumanu
This week for P.E Hurumanu we have been working on the sport that we chose for our groups. As you know my groups name is Celtics and we chose Basketball as our sport. We had to use a document full of questions that we had to answer questions like what two drills will you practice? The first drill we did was defending crossovers. What we had to do was stand in two lines, one line had a ball and the person in front tried to shoot and the first person in the other line would defend, then you would switch lines. The second drill was basically the same but what we had to do was stand in one big line and the first person would stand at a certain point and shoot from there. I think I worked well with my team today by cheering them on while they had their shot. I also helped one specific person in my team by helping them up when they tripped.

Hurumanu Sport
This week for hurumanu we started sport with Miss Simpson. We did fitness testing and the beep test. We did fitness testing because we are doing it again later in this hurumanu and we are going to see if our scores are different. First we did sit ups, I did ten. Then we did a sit and reach test. For that we had to sit with our feet with against a box and then push a bit of wood as far as we can, I got 10.2 centimetres. After that we did hand grip tests, you had to hold a metal grip and squeeze them together, I got one. The last thing we did was the vertical jump. You had to stand sideways up against the wall and then reach your arm up as high as you can then you had to jump as high as you can and record that. When I did it I got 1.9 standing and 2.2 jumping. Today we did the beep test and my score was 5.1 which I think was pretty good. I think I worked pretty well with my team which are called the Celtics. I think I have to improve on my breathing while I'm running because It hurts really bad after. I will work on this buy deep breathing and stretching afterwards. I helped everyone when we were doing the beep test by cheering them on.

To The All Blacks
Today for C.I.P we had to make something to support the All Blacks for there journey in the world cup. Felicity, Shelby and I made a supportive video. We added things like good luck and we also talked about Beauden Barrett because he is supporting his disabled sister.
Here is the video:
We also made a google drawing which had questions and other facts about the All Blacks. We did this work because we want to support the All Blacks with the world cup. Here is the drawing:
