Extension:
What is another experiment you could do using chromatography and how would you do it.
Title: Fingerprint / Police Chromatography
Aim: To find out how you make fingerprint powder and how it works.
Materials: Corn Starch, Measuring Cup. Matches or lighter, A Candle, A Ceramic Bowl, A Knife or Paint Brush, A Mixing Bowl.
Process:
Step 1: Follow the link to see how to make fingerprint powder.
Step 2: Click this link. Click Me!
I am a student at in Uru Mānuka. In 2020 I was a year 9 and in 2021 I will be a year 10. This is a place where I will be able to share my learning with you. Please note....some work won't be edited - just my first drafts, so there may be some surface errors. I would love your feedback, comments, thoughts and ideas.

Chromatography & Skittles
Aim: To separate colours by using the process of chromatography.
Definition: A technique for separating the different parts of a mixture / solid using liquid.
Rainbow paper
Materials;
1. Filter paper
2. Felt pens
3. Paper cup
4. Water
5. Pencil
6. Ruler
Process:
Step 1: First draw a 1 cm line on your paper then a 2 cm line on your paper.
Step 2: Next draw a circle with all three of your felts on the 1 cm line.
Step 3: Then fold the paper on the 2 cm line and place the paper on the edge.
Step 5: Watch the colours and the water dissolve up the paper.
Findings: Write about what happened.
We found out that if you have the colours black, red and green you can see the reaction they make on the filter paper with water.
Reflection: What have I learnt from this experiment?
I learnt that water and felts are more interesting than you think.
Skittles
Aim: To separate colours by using the process of chromatography.
Aim: To separate colours by using the process of chromatography.
Materials;
1. Petrie Dish
2. Skittles
3. Water
Process:
Step 1: Get your petrie dish and your skittles
Step 2: Put your skittles in your dish
Step 3: Spread you skittles out the pour your water in the dish
Step 4: Watch the colour from the skittles turn into a pie shape
Findings: Write about what happened.
The skittles made a water colour explosion to make a pie of colours.Reflection: What have I learnt from this experiment?
2. Skittles
3. Water
I learnt that skittles are not just a delicious treat.
What did the colours do?
What did the colours do?
Escape from the skittles and melted together.Did the colours mix together?
Yes
Why or why not?
Because the water and the food die mixed together
When We Have A Reliver
Today with our reliever I was working on my blog comments for Gilberthorpes. I only got to of my comments finished because I went to sit with my friends and listened to music. When we have guests in our class I should do the work they tell us to do and follow our class rules even when our teacher isn't there. I should also follow the relievers class rules so I don't get a referral. Next time I will do the work i'm supposed to be doing, not listen to music and learn not to sit with my friends.

Drama Chorus
Today I will be talking to you about my hurumanu drama class. We had to make a chorus about healthy eating and how we look after our well being. Me and my friends Ella and Felicity made a chorus that said " Eat fruits and vegetables!" Here are some sayings that you could use to talk about healthy eating.

Water Filtration Plantf
What is filtration?
Filtration is the process of turning something dirty into clean.
The water is dripping through the filter but is not turning clear.
I think the sand got out of the filter paper and made the water more dirty.
We finished the experiment but failed to make the filter work.
Examples are:
- Coffee Filter
- Chlorine Filter
- Tea Filter
Materials
1. Bottle
2. Sand
3. Pebbles
4. Dirty water
5.Filter Paper
Process - ( use verbs or doing words in each step )
Step 1
Cut the bottle In half
Step 2
Put the top half upside down in the bottom half
STEP 3
Add layers of sand & pebbles
STEP 4
Get 1 cup of dirty water
STEP 5
Pour dirty water into your funnel
Measurements
Write a short sentence about the water every 1 minute.
Include 'How much water has filtered through', 'How fast it is dripping through', and 'How clear the water is'.
The water is dripping through the filter but is not turning clear.
I think the sand got out of the filter paper and made the water more dirty.
We finished the experiment but failed to make the filter work.

Volcano Experiment
WALT: Write about our home chemistry experiments.
A couple of weeks ago we did a volcano experiment. The experiment was to show us how to make a fake volcano. Here is my paragraph to show my learning.
Aim: To make a chemical reaction (fizz).
Materials: Baking Soda, Vinegar, 2x Cups, Tray, Teaspoon.
First get your materials and your ingredients. Then place your two cups in your tray. Place the tray with the cups on a table. Add your teaspoon of baking soda and your amount of choice for your vinegar. Add your baking soda first then your vinegar. Once the reaction has happened repeat the experiment but add you vinegar first and see what happens.

Hauora Movies
WALT: talk about physical wellbeing.
This week we had to make a video that shows physical wellbeing. Physical wellbeing is eating healthy, doing exercise and lots of other things. So me and my friends Risha, Nevaeh and Tasharn made a video to show our findings. Enjoy!

Own Experiment
AIM: DESIGN AN EXPERIMENT THAT TESTS THE AMOUNT OF SALT THAT MUST BE IN WATER BEFORE IT WILL NOT FREEZE WHEN LEFT OVERNIGHT IN THE FREEZER.
The Plan.
- What do we need to find out? How much salt we need to make water unable to freeze in the freezer overnight.
- How will we find it out? By doing research on the internet.
- How will we record what we find? Google Slides
- What equipment do we need for the experiment? Freezer, Water, Bottle, Salt and a measuring cup.
- How long will it take? 5 Minutes and overnight
The Procedure
Step 1: Get a bottle
Step 2: Get a measuring cup
Step 3: Get water & salt
Step 4: Measure your salt and put it in your water
Step 5: Put the salty water in the freezer overnight.
Step 2: Get a measuring cup
Step 3: Get water & salt
Step 4: Measure your salt and put it in your water
Step 5: Put the salty water in the freezer overnight.
Step 6: The next morning get your salty water from the freezer and make sure it it not frozen
The Process - Diagram
- Beakers
- Water
- Measuring spoons or cups
- Salt
CARR Values
WALT: Use all of our values while we are at school.
For this activity we are learning about our school values. What we had to do is get into groups and make a video, skit or dance about one of our values. The value my group got was Resilience, we made a dance. The other values are Commitment, Achievement and Respect. When I was in my group we didn't work very well together at all. We were not successful which meant we had a very poor dance.
