SJL Day 3 Awesome animals

Today is the third day of the Summer Learning Journey this year. The theme for this year is The World Around Us. This weeks activities are called A place to stand.

Activity 1: Fantastic Beasts

For this activity we had to watch and read the preview of JK Rowling's new book 'Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them.' Then we had to make our own beast and describe it and make the readers think it's real.

My beast is a living breathing morphed dragon. Her colours remind you of a real life fire, dancing in the wind. If you touch her her teeth will sink into your soul and skin you like you are an animal. Her scales feel like rotten wood that has been sitting in the woods for years. Her smell is like a dead candle mixed with burnt flesh. When she roars she sounds like a spine chilling lion that is transforming into her dragon self.

Activity 2: The secretive skink

For this activity we had to learn about lizards, geckos and skinks. We had to learn about one skink in particular. The Chevron Skink. The Chevron skink is an endangered species that live in Great Barrier Island and Little Barrier Island. Then we had to learn about the DOC rangers. DOC stands for Department of conservation. Very little people live on those island because the government want to keep them safe. Once we had finished that we had to list the pros and cons for being a DOC ranger.

Image result for chevron skinkPros:
1. Get to be involved with animals.
2. Get to live on peaceful islands
3. The staff are always friendly

Cons:
1. Not many people on the island so would be lonely
2. There is not many people so there would not be much to do
3. We would have to be away from our family

I would like to be a DOC ranger because it's peaceful and your protecting something in this world that is important.

Activity 3. The WWF World Wildlife Fund

didn't get finished

SJL Day 2 Forest Life

Today is the second day of the Summer Learning Journey this year. The theme for this year is The World Around Us. This weeks activities are called A place to stand.

Activity 1: Giants Among Us
Image result for tane mahuta
For this activity we had to read a segment about the biggest Kauri tree Tāne Mahuta. In english Tāne Mahuta it is " The lord of the forest" Once we had learnt and read that we had to explain to you whether we would like to visit the real Tāne Mahuta or not.

I would like to go and see Tāne Mahuta one day because it's filled with so much life and i'm a little bit curious of how big it really is.

Activity 2: Fabulous Ferns
For this activity we had to learn about ferns and what they are and what they represent. As you know on most of our sports teams uniforms there is a fern in them, which leads us to our activity. We had to list 3 NZ sports teams that have 'Fern' in their name. Then post a picture of there uniform and after, explain which one is your favorite and why.

1. Silver ferns: Netball
2. Black ferns: Women's Rugby
3. Ice Fernz: Women's Hockey

My favorite uniform from this selection is the netball uniform. I like it because it's light so when your running around you don't get as sweaty.

Activity 3: Weird and wonderful

Image result for cactusFor this activity we have to learn maths. We had to learn about what they were and how amazing they are then start doing the maths. If we got a cactus for our birthday and we gave it 3 mls of water on everyday of a full year how much water would we give it?

How to work it out.
Start by multiplying 3x365 you get an estimated answer of 1095. So if we turn that into mls you would give it 1095 mls.

SJL Day 1, In the beginning...

Today is the first day of the Summer Learning Journey this year. The theme for this year is The World Around Us. This weeks activities are called A place to stand.

Activity 1: The legend of New Zealand.

For this activity we had to read about the legend of how Māui pulled up the north Island with his fish hook that was made from his grandmothers jawbone, his canoe from his village and the strength from his bones, He created New Zealand.

Image result for maui pulling up new zealand
Once we had read that we had to go to the Tourism NZ website and post our top three facts about New Zealand. Here are my three facts.

1: The Māori name for NZ is Aotearoa which means The land of the long white cloud.

2: New Zealanders are also called Kiwis but Kiwi is not a fruit. It is New Zealand's native flightless bird.

3: New Zealand is one of the world's least populated countries with over 4 million populations.

Activity 2: North & South

As you know there are 2 main islands in NZ, the North & the South. Then they started going on about there hometown and where they live which brings us to our activity.

For our activity we have to think about our home town and whats special about it. We have to use describing words and adjectives for this work.

Christchurch.
Image result for cat cafe christchurchChristchurch is a beautiful place with lots of gardens and lakes to swim in and lots of nice restaurants and cafes in town. It also so has a cat cafe. A cat cafe is a cafe where you do all the normal stuff but there are also cats there so while you are enjoying your food you can be petting the cutest cat ever! Most of the cats there are disabled so people rescue them and take them to the cafe where they get looked after until there time is up. The part of christchurch I live in is very small but gets lots of visitors because of the 7 schools there.

Activity 3: Ice, Ice Baby.

For this activity we had to read about antarctica and all its facts then we had to learn about a digital foot print and what it is.
Once we had learnt that we had to insert a foot of our own and explain what a positive footprint looks like and what to do to be safe online.

German School Day

WALT: Prep for the SJL (summer learning journey)

Today we had to pretend that we were in a country that we chose and pretend that we bumped in to a school girl who tells us what it's like to go to school there. I chose Germany. The girl gave us a page of her diary which tells us what she does in a normal school day.
Here is two days of her being at her school:

Then we had to compare it to our school for two days:

Now I had to answer some questions:

Would you rather go to school in New Zealand or Germany?
New Zealand

Why do you feel that way?
Because it's my home

What is your favourite subject?
Maths

Why is that your favourite subject?
Because it's tricky and I am good with hard stuff.

Cybersmart Reflection

WALT Write reflections about what we have learnt.

For this year we were doing cybersmart for every term. We were asked to do a reflection about what we had learnt and what we think what could have been better.

Term 1 what did we do?
Term 1 we were learning about smart learning. Smart learning is about understanding and demonstrating how to be safe online.

Term 2 what did we do?
Term 2 we were learning about having a smart footprint. A smart footprint is knowing what you post and look at online and making sure you are safe.

Term 3 what did we do?
Term 3 we were learning about smart relationships. A smart relationship is talking to someone online and making sure they are safe to talk to and that they are not scammers.

Term 4 what did we do?
Term 4 we were learning about being a smart user. A smart user is knowing what being responsible online is and what they need to do to be responsible.

My favourite thing in cybersmart this year was getting to know how to be safe online as a teen.

Something I didn't enjoy was being treated like we didn't know what being safe online was.

Something my cybersmart teacher did well was making the activities fun.

Something my cybersmart teacher could to better was give us breaks so we could give our brains a rest.

100 Word Challenge

WALT: engage our audience through our writing.

For this weeks 100 word challenge we had to write a story using the picture and 100 words. This is my story and the picture. Enjoy :)

One day a girl rode her bike down a path and chained her bike to a tree while she went to the store. When she left the store she forgot her bike and walked home. 20 years later she walked down that same path. But, when she looked around she found something that she was sure to remember. She had found her bike from 20 years ago. Although it was the same bike, it was different. It had grown into the tree and become a murder weapon for a murder 15 years ago. So the bike was haunted and cursed for eternity.

It's the one the only Bugsy Malone!

For our passion projects this term I am doing musical theatre and we are performing Bugsy Malone.
I am performing two roles. Cagey Joe & Doodle.

Task 1
What was it like in the 1920's?

Buildings: Apartments, Beige, Boring
Fashion: Bold, Fancy, Old
Home life: Social, Exciting, collaborative

Task 2
Write your characters back story.

(girl) Cagey Joe:
The story behind Cagey Joe is a very mysterious story. It is about how Cagey Joe started off as a normal girl who was interested in boxing and wanted to become professionally known for being a boxer. She was known as a famous boxer for some time and never lost a fight until one appalling day, she lost his fight and also lost her reputation. So, she became Cagey Joe the boxing instructor.

(girl) Doodle
Doodle grew up as a strong but dumb young woman. She would always be dropping something or forgetting something. But that makes you wonder, why is she in Dandy Dan's gang? Well let me tell you, she was really quite angry when she met Dandy Dan and he thought she was a strong non clumsy woman who could fight and stop other gangs. But, as you can see that is not how it played out because in the end she was killed.
